The members of the Nora Lancaster Garden Club held their January meeting at the Barbara Rose Johns Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library. The theme of the meeting was “Old Is New.”

Sid Allen and Rochie Allen, from Rochette’s Florist were the guest speakers. Using vintage containers, Sid Allen designed arrangements appropriate for the era of the container, but incorporating a modern flair to fit today’s homes. His designs included a Hogarth in a loving cup, a centerpiece in a basket, a floral hat in a lady’s head vase, and a right angle in a decorative upright vase. He explained some of the changes in the floral industry and how the styles and techniques of designing arrangements have changed over the years.

According to Allen, the style in floral designs today is more relaxed and reflects the loose garden look rather than the structured look of the past. Members winning ribbons for their exhibits were (blue) Helen Smith, Tricia Crute, Jane Clark and Dr. Barbara Smith; (red) Jane Crute. Horticulture winners were (blue) Becky Kelly and Dr. Barbara Smith; (red) Becky Kelly and Dr. Barbara Smith; and (yellow) Tricia Crute. Hostesses were Jane Crute and Tricia Crute.
