On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the Farmville Lions and Longwood’s Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services (SHLS) presented two Hearing Conservation Presentations to Cumberland County Elementary School (CCES) fourth-grade students and their teachers. This was the third year for the presentations by the Lions/Longwood partnership to CCES and was a huge success. Approximately 93 students received this valuable training a release noted.

The presentations, developed and given by Longwood SHLS students taught fourth-graders about parts of the ear, facts about sound, how sound travels, what sounds are too loud, what sounds are safe, and how to protect their hearing. According to the release, “all the fourth-grade students were well mannered, attentive, and responsive during the presentations and it was very apparent they had been properly prepared by dedicated and caring professional teachers.”

According to the release, The Farmville Lions Club is very appreciative of the professional and collegial support received from Dr. Lissa Power-deFur, Professor, Communications Sciences and Disorders and Director of Longwood Speech, Hearing, and Learning Services (SHLS); Dr. Mani Aguilar, SHLS Clinical Audiologist; Caitlin Frank, Speech-Language Pathologist; the Longwood undergraduate Communication Sciences and Disorders majors; Abigail Collier, Sarah Wright who dressed as the caped hearing hero “Decibella’”; and Longwood Graduate student Meredith Puryear. “They all performed a superb job keeping the kids attention on learning about the ear and how to save their hearing,” the release further cited.
