Funding guidance through GO Virginia Region 3

GO Virginia Region 3, a business-led economic development initiative, is launching “8 Weeks to Application,” in February. This program will guide individuals and organizations with project ideas through the process of collecting all the data necessary to submit a strong project proposal – in only two months. In addition to weekly emails and downloadable worksheets, the program includes two one-on-one coaching calls with economic development experts to hone raw ideas into competitive grant applications.
“There are many micro-successes across Southern Virginia,” says Liz Povar, program manager for GO Virginia Region 3. “If shared and scaled, those successes can result in significant positive impact on this Region’s economy.”
Over a two-month timeframe, participants will benefit from this coaching model that helps project planning teams build applications. The initiative also raises awareness throughout the region that funding is available through Go Virginia for economic and workforce development projects.

“GO Virginia shines a light on regionalism,” says Dr. Angeline Godwin, president of Patrick Henry Community College. “Within a region, people and organizations with similar cultures can take advantage of each other’s strengths and leverage opportunities that they wouldn’t have the capacity to take on individually.”
Collaboration is a key aspect and requirement of the proposal for funding. All projects must have support from two or more localities and all GO Virginia funds must be matched by non-state funds from federal or local governments, from foundations or from the private sector. Through its Growth and Diversification Plan, Region 3 identified opportunities in the following categories as priorities for the region: Talent development and recruitment; growth industries like advanced manufacturing, natural resource products and IT and data centers; entrepreneurship, small business development and business scale-up.
