Arleen Smith Vance

Arleen Smith Vance, 86 of Cumberland, VA passed away peacefully at home with her daughter and granddaughter by her side. She was a native of Cumberland, born and raised in the Guinea Mills area. In 1949 she moved across Guinea Creek to marry her sweetheart Blaine Vance. They were married 36 years before his death. She is also preceded in death by her parents Virginia Agee Smith and Robert H. Smith, a brother Benjamin Smith, a sister Mary Hedrick.
Those left to carry on without her include a daughter Laura Vance Higgins, a granddaughter Kayla Arleen Higgins, a great-granddaughter Adelyn Fay Mottley and numerous nieces and nephews. One niece she had a special love for, Cindy Hedrick.
She held several positions of employment in our area, but is most remembered from Cumberland Farm and Auto Parts. She was the secretary/bookkeeper for almost 40 years. She loved all of her boys at work just as if they were her own. She also volunteered and helped with various projects in Cumberland throughout her life. She loved helping with the Clothes Closet and playing Bingo with her friends. Her newest friendships came from the Red Hatters Club. She was a lifelong member of Tar Wallet Baptist Church and held many positions including being a Deacon. She was a friend to everyone she met. She loved God and her family most of all.

A memorial service was held Saturday, December 8, at 3 p.m. at the Tarwallet Baptist Church in Cumberland, Family received friends 1 hour prior to service starting at 2 p.m. at the church.
