Tigers fall 32-19 to host Panthers

The Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) football team saw its two-game win streak end Saturday afternoon when it lost 32-19 to host Ferrum College. The Tigers took an early lead, but the Panthers enjoyed a big third quarter, outscoring Hampden-Sydney 17-0 in the stanza en route to victory.

The Tigers now stand at 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, while the Panthers improve to 4-3 and 2-3 in ODAC play.

For the game, H-SC had 402 yards of offense on 315 yards passing and 87 yards rushing, but they were hampered by four turnovers. Senior quarterback Alec Cobb was 35-of-53 passing for 310 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Junior wide receiver Major Morgan led all receivers with 13 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Freshman running back Kaleb Smith had seven catches for 56 yards, sophomore wide receiver Blake Page produced five catches for 47 yards, and sophomore tight end Ed Newman, a former Fuqua School standout, recorded three receptions for 42 yards.

Smith also led the Tigers’ ground game with 66 yards on 17 carries.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 486 yards — 226 passing and 240 rushing. Senior free safety Ryan Mallory had a team-high 10 tackles.

H-SC visits Washington and Lee University (5-2, 3-2 ODAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
