Cumberland County Landfill Awareness Committee will meet Sunday afternoon, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland Community Center, 45 South and Davenport Road, concerning the proposed landfill to learn more and receive information about the stand against this issue. The Cumberland Community Christmas Mother program is in need of items and volunteers for the 2018 distribution season. In addition to staffing, the following items are needed: new board games (Monopoly, Operation, Trouble, etc.), new socks and clothing items. Donations of new items can be dropped off at Cumberland Social Services Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 71 Community Center Drive, Cumberland. Financial contributions (checks) can be made payable to Cumberland Community Christmas Mother and can be sent to P.O. Box 33, Cumberland, Virginia 23040.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Debbie Kennel at (804) 980-5022 or Barbara Daniels at (804) 986-5852. Volunteers are needed for setting up and resetting the shopping rooms as well with assisting shoppers with making selections. The committee will meet again on Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. in room C-8 at 71 Community Center Drive. Those interested in more information are welcome to meet with the committee. We urge your ongoing and future support and will be looking forward to your donations and service in the coming months.

The Cumberland County Board of Supervisors monthly meeting is held every second Tuesday unless otherwise announced at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland County Court Room.

Happy birthday wishes are sent out this week to Sue Lipscomb of Cumberland on Wednesday Aug. 29.

A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held for Lacey Baggett, age three of Cumberland, who was recently diagnosed with a very large brain tumor that has been removed but her recovery time will be a long road ahead. Come out and support Lacey and her family on Sunday at the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department from noon – 6 p.m. Spaghetti dinners will be sold by donations only. There will also be raffles, silent auctions and local vendors. Music will be provided by Nelson and Karen Critcher.

Happy anniversary wishes go out this week to the following couples. Wayne and Sue Lipscomb of Cumberland on Tuesday Aug. 28 and Wilson and Pauline Shores of Cartersville. Congratulations to both couples.

Our sympathy is extended to the Martin family of Dillwyn. James Ray Martin went home to be with the Lord Sunday Aug. 12. He will be greatly missed by all.

Annie May Miles of Dillwyn and Barry and Linda Miles of Cumberland all visited in the home of James and Virginia Boyles of Cumberland on Friday.

Annual homecoming and revival services will be held at Hatcher Baptist Church of Cumberland Aug. 23 – 26.

Revival services will be held Thursday Aug. 23 – 25 nightly at 7 p.m. with special music nightly. Homecoming services will be held Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with gospel music at its best featuring “The Mylon Hayes Family” of North Carolina. This will be followed by the morning worship service with lunch to follow in the church fellowship hall. Guest speaker will be Evangelist Kenneth Cloud of Georgia.
