Prince Edward County High School’s varsity girls volleyball team does not have a head coach yet, but it has leadership that has helped it get off to a 2-1 start to the 2018 season.
The Lady Eagles stumbled in their match Tuesday against host Cumberland County High School, but they topped host Greensville County High School 25-9, 25-10, 25-19 on Aug. 20 in their season opener. Two days later they dispatched host Brunswick High School 25-12, 25-11, 25-11.
Malaysia Messerschmidt, who was an assistant coach with the team last year, has been helping coach Prince Edward this year, and she is optimistic about what the team can do based on what she has seen from the girls.
“I think we’ll do pretty good,” she said. “We have to work out some kinks here and there, but that’s what practice is for. I think we’ll be alright.”
She noted that the team is composed of three seniors, five juniors, one sophomore and one freshman.
Standout senior student-athlete Jordan Booker had been part of the team, but Messerschmidt said she has since moved away. The remaining seniors on the roster include Olivia Davis, Da’Mya Harris and Taylor “Mackenzie” Morris.
The five juniors include Asia Edmonds, Kayleerae Folz, Katlyn Harris, Makayla Morris and Alia Muhammad. Rounding out the team is sophomore Maria Ines Brito Raia and freshman Jayla Ford.
Asked to highlight leaders on the squad, Messerschmidt said, “I would say Makayla and Mackenzie and Da’Mya. Those three, they talk to everybody. They get everybody pumped up. They’re pretty good together.”
She said that Mackenzie is versatile, playing all the way around. Makayla and Da’Mya are both key front-row hitters.
Key matches on the schedule this year include both meetings with Goochland High School, Messerschmidt said, along with showdowns against Buckingham County and Bluestone high schools.
After visiting Bluestone on Thursday, the Lady Eagles host Randolph-Henry High School on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
