James Ray Martin, 84, of Dillwyn, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in Charlottesville.

“Pop” as Ray was affectionately known served in the United States Army and was a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Corrections—Powhatan Correctional Center. Ray was a loving husband, father and grandfather who spent his entire life showing his family how much he loved them. He was a carpenter by trade and could make anything from a piece of wood.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Grace Murphy Martin; children, Dolores Massie and husband, Johnny and Tony Martin and wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Amanda Massie-Cox and husband, Grady, Stockton Ray Massie and wife, Karmen, Caroline Joyce Martin and Emerson Ray Martin; great-granddaughters, Autumn Michelle Cox, Bonnie Grace Massie and due to arrive in November, Savannah Elizabeth Cox; sisters, Marie Proffitt, Mae Corum and Frances Grigsby; brothers Earl, Lewis, Johnny and Paul Martin and a host of nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by sister, Annie Rippeon; brothers, Lee and Wilbert Martin.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn. Interment with military honors followed in the Jones Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m.
