The descendants of Lizzie and Maxie Wade from Alabama, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D. C. gathered at the Darlington Heights Fire Department June 16-17 for a family reunion.
The family’s matriarch, Lizzie Jackson Wade, was born in 1855. It is uncertain as to where she was born, but it is believed to have been in the Madisonville area of Charlotte County. Her parents were Martha Ann and Elijah Jackson.
The family’s patriarch, Maxie Wade, was born March 12, 1868. He was one of 14 children born to John “Jack” and Clementine Wade at Avondale — the residence of G. W. Watson in the Taro community in Charlotte County. The couple continued to live in Charlotte County after they married. Initially they lived at “Maloney Hill” and were tenant farmers. They later purchased a house and 110 acres of land in the Taro community.
Family members enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship, fun and food. Sunday morning the descendants worshipped at St. Andrews Baptist Church in Cullen. The Rev. Jonathan Wade, great-great grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Maxie Wade, preached and the Wade Family Choir sung.
Following the worship service family members met at the gravesite of Charmie Bruce, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maxie Wade, for family reflection and prayer.
