William McCarthy Newman

William McCarthy Newman, 83 of Cumberland, Virginia passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. He is the son of the late Walter C. and Elizabeth Asal Newman and husband of Frieda Sams Newman.
He was born on December 12, 1934 in Cumberland County where he lived most of his life. He loved to hunt, fish and play ball when he was not busy raising cattle on the farm. He was a dedicated deacon in his church and was active as a Gideon for many years. After serving his country in the Army, he returned to Cumberland and worked for the VA Department of Forestry for over 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Frieda, two sons Paul Newman (Theresa) of Prospect, Ben Newman (Anna) of Gainesville, a daughter Kim N. White (Cliff) of Cumberland, a stepson Billy A. Franklin (Sharon) of Farmville, two step daughters Nancy F. Jerolaman (Mike) of Farmville, Donna L. Franklin of Alexandria, 1 brother Jack T. Newman (Betty) of Cumberland and a sister Jean N. Ownby (David) of Cumberland, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 9, 11 a.m. in the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens. Family received friends Friday June 8, at Puckett Funeral Home.
