Dukes trounce Broncos 17-5 for big road win

Cumberland County High School’s varsity baseball team achieved its second win of the season in an emphatic way Monday, routing host Franklin High School 17-5. The Dukes started the season with 10 straight losses but have persevered and experienced some success in recent play. Cumberland junior Braden Gilman, pictured above, showcased his defensive skills Monday, starting on the mound and earning the win. The Dukes’ 17 runs were the most they had scored in a game all season, with their second-highest tally coming May 2 when they defeated visiting Buckingham County High School 12-2. The Knights narrowly prevailed in a rematch Tuesday, 11-10. The Dukes (2-12) host Central Lunenburg High School on Friday at 5 p.m.
