Charles Rhea Houchins

Charles Rhea Houchins, Jr. 90, of Crewe, Va. passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. Rhea was predeceased by his wife, Alice Kramer Houchins. He is survived by his two children, Charlotte H. Leslie (Bobby) and Charles R. Houchins III, all of Crewe; four grandchildren, Alison Leslie Lewis (Kevin) of Richmond, Karen Leslie Krotzer, Daniel C. Houchins and W. Matthew Houchins, all of Crewe, one great-grandson, Brody Rhea Krotzer; sister Charlotte Houchins Decker; numerous nieces and nephews.
Rhea was born at Memorial Hospital, Danville, Virginia on October 26, 1927 to Hazel Waltman Houchins and Charles Rhea Houchins, Sr. He moved to Crewe as a small boy with his parents when his father purchased B and M Drug Company. Rhea graduated from MCV School of Pharmacy and became registered on November 15, 1951. After his father’s death in 1960, he ran the B and M Drug until 1987 at which time he sold the store and became a pharmacist at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, where he practiced almost 20 years. He was a member of the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association for years and then the Virginia Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists.
Rhea served on the Town Council of Crewe for 14 years, from July 1, 1998 until June 30, 2012. He was on the Nottoway Planning Commission and Lifetime Member of the Nottoway Emergency Squad with 17 years of service. He received his pilot’s license at the age of 16 and also held Commercial and Instrument ratings. He was a charter member of the Crewe Flying Club. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the Crewe Episcopal Church. He served on the Board of Directors of several banks in Crewe.
The family received friends 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 4, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd. (Bus. Hwy. 460), near Blackstone. Graveside funeral services were held 11 a.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018, in Crewe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nottoway County Emergency Squad, P. O.
