Longwood University sophomore Brandon Weaver claimed his first career individual medalist honors with a par save on the second playoff hole, as he propelled the Longwood men’s golf team to its first team title of the 2017- 18 season Saturday afternoon at The 2018 Manor Intercollegiate in Farmville.
The Lancers posted a 29- over par 893 team score to place first out of 13 teams. After posting his second straight two-over par 74 in the final round at the 7,246-yard, par-72 The Manor Golf Club, Weaver had to outlast Western Carolina’s Dylan MacQueen and Jackson Bishop in a playoff to claim his first collegiate victory. Weaver was able to two-putt from 35 feet on the first playoff hole before getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker to clinch the win.
“I hit it pretty well all weekend,” Weaver said. “I honestly wasn’t sure if I played well enough today, but I was fortunate to get into the playoff. I was able to hit a couple of good shots there in the playoff in order to get it done.”
Weaver was one of four Lancers to claim top-20 finishes among the field of 70 players, as Longwood captured its third team title at The Manor Intercollegiate in the 10 tournaments played, while never finishing worse than third overall. Longwood posted a final round 12-over par 300 to finish with a 54-hole team total of 293-300-300 — 893 (+29) to defeat Delaware by three strokes (+32, 896). Western Carolina (+36, 900), Indiana University — Purdue University Indianapolis (+50, 914) and Wright State (+54, 918) rounded out the top five teams.
“We accomplished the most important thing this weekend and that was to come out on top,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “We didn’t really play great today, but we were able to hang in there and make enough pars to finish the job. We were able to get four scores that we could use.”
The finish for Weaver marks his fifth consecutive tournament inside the top 30, including all four tournaments this spring. In that stretch, Weaver has turned in scores of 74 or better in 12 of 15 rounds played.
”I’m thrilled for Brandon,” Fillman said. “He really hit it well throughout the three rounds we played. It’s extremely difficult to win a college golf tournament, and I don’t think this will be the only one he’ll win in his career. He hit several good shots in the playoff and was able to make a par putting from a distance on the first playoff hole before hitting a really nice bunker shot on the second playoff hole.”
Junior Jordan Boulton collected his first top-10 finish of the spring season despite turning in an eight-over 80 in the final round Saturday. For Boulton, it marks his fifth top-10 finish of the season, including his second of the spring campaign. It also marks Boulton’s second straight top-10 finish in the even on the heels of a third-place finish a season ago.
Senior Nick Contini was the third Lancer to place among the top 15 with his third consecutive four-over par 76. It marks the second top-15 finish for Contini and his fifth top-25 placing of his senior campaign.
The fourth Lancer to place among the top 20 was junior Adam Szwed who posted a final round four-over par 76 to place tied for 17th overall to claim his second top-20 finish of the season. Longwood freshman Colin Caporal posted a final round two-over par 74, while sophomore Teagan Stephenson played as an individual and turned in a final round four-over 76 to place tied for 35th overall.
The Lancers have nine days off to prepare for the Wofford Coca-Cola Invitational, which will be played April 9-10 at Country Club of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
