Students attend state leadership and recognition conference

Seven students from the Buckingham Career and Technical Education (BCTE) chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated in a weekend leadership training conference April 13-15 in Virginia Beach. Attendees participated in a weekend of workshops and sessions that challenged, informed, and motivated members and their advisers to learn more about leadership.
Chapter advisers, Mary Wise and Sandra Hawk accompanied the members to the meeting.
To begin the conference, nearly 650 members participated in STAR events, a series of competitive events that demonstrate proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills. There are over 80 categories of STAR events for members to compete in as a team or as an individual.
Buckingham FCCLA chapter members participated in the following events: Culinary Arts: team members Bryan Biggers, Joshua Reynolds, and Devin Corral placed first and will represent Virginia at the National Leadership Conference, Culinary Knife Skills competitor Nathan Price placed fourth, Entrepreneurship competitor Katelynn Leondard placed first and will represent Virginia at the National Leadership Conference and Chapter Display competitor Jessica Oliver placed sixth. Member Emily Edwards served as a STAR event room attendant.
Students attend state leadership and recognition conference The culinary team and culinary knife skills competitor were sponsored by several local businesses. Sunday’s Closing General Session included the awarding of STAR Events medals and trophies and installation of new state officers.
Chapter President Bryan Biggers was recognized during the senior spotlight and the chapter overall earned six ribbons for completing FCCLA national programs.
The top winners in each of the national STAR Events will have an opportunity to compete in Atlanta, Georgia at the National Leadership Conference, June 28- July 2, against top winners from other state associations.
FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important family, career, and community issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
