Smith shares top ODAC rookie honor

Hampden-Sydney College freshman golfer Allen Smith (Durham, North Carolina/ Durham Academy) took home one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) major awards this year, winning the Co-ODAC Rookie of the Year honor.

Smith, along with teammates Parker Smith (Warrenton/ Fauquier) and Austin Fockler (Richmond/St. Christopher’s), also earned second team All-ODAC honors.

Guilford College’s Louis Lambert shared Rookie of the Year honors with Smith, while Lambert’s coach, Justin Tereshko, was tabbed the Jack Jensen Coach of the Year.

Washington and Lee University’s Brian Pierce and Luke Farley were named the Golfer and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively, and Randolph-Macon College’s Kirby Sruhar was named the Ted Keller Sportsman of the Year.

Allen Smith has the 10th-best stroke average in the league, shooting 75.3 perround in 16 rounds of play this year. He competed in eight events this season, with his top performance coming in the fall when he won the Greene Turtle Invitational in Winchester, finishing the two-round tournament three-under par. Senior Parker Smith, the 2017 ODAC Golfer of the Year, led the Tigers in stroke-perround average with a 74.2 mark that stands fifth-best in the ODAC. He had one top-five finish this season, placing second in the Greene Turtle Invitational while shooting two-under par.

Fockler, also a senior, produced a 75.4 strokeper- round average that was 12th-best in the ODAC while playing 14 rounds, competing in seven events. He also had a top-10 finish for the Tigers, placing sixth in the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament in September with a three-under par finish in the two-round event.
