Prince Edward County High School’s track and field program produced several notable performances Saturday during the Rod Camden Kickoff Classic at the Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg.
Eagles Head Coach James Baker said the event did not feature any Prince Edward individual winners, but among the Eagles standouts was someone who matched a school record.
“Makayla Morris tied a school record in the high jump at 5 feet 4 inches,” Baker said. “She tied Casey Taylor, who set the record in the ’90s and is in the Christopher Newport University Hall of Fame.”
The jump by Morris, a sophomore, earned her second place in the girls high jump Saturday with a leap that met the Virginia High School League Class 3 state qualifying standard.
Baker noted that freshman Haniyyah Johnson placed third in the girls 100-meter dash and seventh in both the girls shot put and high jump.
Baker highlighted sophomores Naomi Jones and Mia Seay and junior Jordan Booker for placing second, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the girls 400-meter dash. In the girls long jump, Morris, junior Salma Muhammad, Seay and Booker placed fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. In the girls triple jump, Morris, Muhammad, Booker and Seay placed third, fourth fifth and sixth, respectively.
Among the boys Baker highlighted were sophomore Amourre Watkins, who placed third in the boys high jump with a 5-foot-10-inch leap, and sophomore Abdul Johnson, who placed fifth in the boys 200-meter dash.
