Cecil Edwin East, age 89, of Farmville, Virginia passed away on Sunday, April 8th. Cecil was born on March 17, 1929. He met the love of his life, Peggy, and they were married on May 30, 1948. Despite being told by their parents that it would not last, Cecil and Peggy started a life together that would be an example for others of pure love and devotion. Over their 69 years, they had many adventures. Cecil was drafted to serve in the Korean War shortly after their marriage began. He served his country dutifully and met good friends while in Korea but as soon as he was able, he returned home to Peggy and his hometown where he would live out the rest of his life. He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked as a painter. For most of his career, he was self-employed and had many faithful customers. Cecil and Peggy had one son, Wayne. Cecil enjoyed camping, gardening, and especially woodworking in his shop. He was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church for many years. A devoted Christian, husband, and father, Cecil was a gentle, kind soul who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Mildred East, and his brothers and sister (Edgar, Tonstil, and Lucille). He is survived by his loyal wife, Peggy Baker East, his devoted son, Wayne East and wife, Lynn, of Hampden Sydney, only granddaughter, Sandy Burruss and husband, George, and great-grandson, Michael Easton Burruss, all of Rice, and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Tuesday, April 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.
