An 86-year-old woman from Buckingham County was killed Wednesday afternoon when she pulled into the path of a tractor-trailer traveling south on Route 15.
According to Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne Geller, Willie M. Jones had stopped at a stop sign on Route 609, then proceeded to cross Route 15 to make a left turn. Jones, who was driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla, drove into the path of the semi, which was unable to stop. The accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m.
Geller said Jones died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 57-year-old man from Kentucky, was not hurt. In addition, investigators found no violations on the truck.
Virginia State Police Trooper J.P. Campbell led the investigation. State Police from the Appomattox Division Crash Reconstruction Team, as well as the State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team, also assisted with the investigation.
