The Longwood University Chamber Music Series will present a concert by the celebrated Hot Club of San Francisco on Wednesday, March 14. Free and open to the public, the concert will take place in Jarman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., with doors open at 7 p.m.

The Hot Club of San Francisco recreates the timeless music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France. With the all-string instrumentation of the original Hot Club, this versatile and accomplished ensemble takes listeners back in time to the 1930s, to the smoky jazz clubs of Paris and the gypsy caravans of Europe’s countryside.

Led by guitarist Paul Mehling and featuring the vocals of Isabelle Fontaine, the Hot Club of San Francisco has presented concerts and residencies across the globe for more than 20 years. Acoustic Guitar magazine has hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching, and often brilliant.”

The program at Longwood is entitled “Meet Me in Paris,” and features a number of French-language love songs, as well as traditional jazz classics like “Avalon” and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business But My Own.” All the music is thoroughly steeped in the Gypsy jazz style, with a flamboyant yet melancholy combination of voice, violin, guitar and string bass.
