Cougars narrowly top Tigers

The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team’s match against visiting Averett University went down to the wire Tuesday, but the Cougars nabbed the 5-4 win in non-conference action.
Matthew Moody and Michael Moody picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers. Averett claimed the upper hand in the other two doubles matches, 8-6 and 9-7, to go into singles action ahead 2-1.
Clark Cummings and Matthew Moody won their singles matches at No. 4 and No. 1, respectively, with scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-3, giving the Tigers a 3-2 edge.
The Cougars won the No. 5 flight to tie, followed by a victory at No. 2 to go ahead 4-3. They then clinched the match at No. 3 — 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
Grayson Burns rounded out the match with a 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
The Tigers (4-2) hosted Virginia State University on Thursday, and they will visit Roanoke College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
