Committee on right track

Editor:

The regular Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors meeting was held March 13. At this meeting the board voted to form an audit committee, whose purpose is to select the auditor, review the audit after the auditors prepare it, and work with the auditors to prepare the final document for presentation to the full Board of Supervisors, then and only then will the county administrator be able to see the audit.

These duties are currently being provided by the county administrator. This seems to be a conflict of interest to me since the purpose of the audit is to monitor the millions of dollars of taxpayer money the county deals with each year.

To have the county administrator perform these duties concerning the audit is ludicrous. His spending activities are what is being monitored by the auditors.

My thanks to supervisors Pattie Cooper-Jones, Odessa Pride, David Emert and Jim Wilck for voting to put an additional step of accountability to ensure the correct spending of taxpayer money in the county.

Supervisor Bobby Jones, Bob Timmons and Jerry Townsend voted against the audit committee. I will leave it to them to explain to their constituents why they voted against accountability for the county administrator.
