Last September the Ladies by Choice group of Nottoway High School attended the Greater Richmond St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer at the Bon Secours Redskins Training Camp. The ladies came ready to participate and support the walk. They lined the walk route with colorful pom-poms and outfits that matched to cheer on each runner and walker in the race. Upon returning to their school, they made the decision to do more. The young ladies led by members of The Farmville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Ms Deborah Calhoun and Mrs. Andrienette Cousins, decided to make handmade cards to bring cheer to the St. Jude patients. The cards were then hand delivered and presented to ALSAC/St. Jude Regional Director, Mr. Reed Hartley.
Ladies by Choice is a group of sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls who meet every Tuesday and Thursday for the last 8 years to participate in mentoring and enrichment activities. They are part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center at Nottoway Middle School located in Crewe, under the direction of Marcia J. Worsham, Director. These young ladies take part in a variety of activities to encourage them to go beyond expectations, be all they can be and help others along the way. These activities include arts and crafts, self-actualization, hygiene, diet and exercise as well as community service projects.
