Dukes advance, Lady Dukes fall

Cumberland County High School’s varsity boys and girls basketball teams faced regional tests earlier this week with the boys advancing on and the girls falling in the opening round.
The No. 1 Dukes defeated visiting No. 8 Rappahannock County High School on Tuesday evening by a score of 65- 27 in the Region 1B tournament quarterfinals.
Cumberland (13-8) was set to host No. 5 William Campbell High School on Thursday in the regional semifinals. With a win over the Generals, the Dukes would play for the regional championship on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Tuesday’s victory was a key turnaround for the Cumberland boys as they were coming off of four-game losing streak, having faced some of the best teams in the James River District.
The Cumberland Lady Dukes, who held the No. 4 seed in the Region 1B girls tourney, host their quarterfinal game Monday night against No. 5 Appomattox Regional Governor’s School and fell 43-27.
The Lady Dukes finished the season with a record of 6-15.
