Shirley Brooks Overton passed away on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2017. Born in Richmond, Virginia on June 7, 1934, she was 83 when she joined her husband Campbell Lafayette “Pee Wee” Overton in heaven. Shirley is also preceded in her death by her four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughter Grace Overton Helms (Jim), granddaughter Brooks Toombs (Trey) and grandson James Helms IV, sisters-in-laws Mary Overton, Carolyn Overton, Linda Overton and brother –in- law Quinton Overton (Ann). Somehow her name changed to “Granny” when the grandkids came along, even her work colleagues at the Town of Farmville called her Granny. She loved all her nieces and nephews and their children. They were always welcomed on the “The Hill” to play. Known for her homemade chocolate pies and “one-of-a- kind” Mac & cheese, she loved to have dinners at her house.

Shirley was put to rest in the Westview Cemetery in Farmville, Virginia on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 in a family graveside service. Please make contributions to Hospice of Virginia 2235 Staples Mill Road Suite 100 Richmond, VA 23230. Hospice of Virginia was the soothing presence in Shirley’s final days.
