A Meherrin man, who was charged with second degree attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling in June, is set to stand trial in Prince Edward County Circuit Court on Thursday. James R. Scott faces charges of discharging firearms or missiles within or at building or dwelling house, attempted second degree murder, point or brandish firearm, reckless handling of firearm, assault and battery and use of firearm in first felony offense.

Scott was arrested “after a brief standoff” with police, according to Prince Edward Sheriff Wesley W. Reed, who said that when police responded to the incident Scott was brandishing a gun outside a home.

“Deputies were successful in convincing the subject to surrender peacefully,” Reed said in a press release.

According to police, the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Scott and the victim.
