Prince Edward County High School’s varsity girls basketball team routed visiting Amelia County High School 64- 41 on Friday to extend its winning streak to six games.
“We’re heading in the right direction, but we know we’ve got a long way to go to get where we want to go,” Lady Eagles Head Coach Carlton Redd said.
As of Monday, Prince Edward held a 14-3 overall record, and according to the James River District (JRD) website, the Lady Eagles were in first place in the district with a 10-1 JRD record.
Though the Lady Eagles won by 23 on Friday, they had to show resilience early.
“The biggest takeaway from that game for me was that in the first quarter we were down 14-1, and I was real impressed by the way they kept their composure,” Redd said of his players.
Prince Edward junior Da’Mya Harris led her team with 24 points, the kind of performance Redd has come to expect from her.
“She puts it in the basket,” he said, “but Ka’Deshia (Wright) played a great game offensively …”
Wright, a senior known for her consistent defensive impact, scored 14 points.
“When she can turn on the defense and score, it works well,” Redd said.
Junior Madison Lehman scored 16 points, junior Shauneice Beasley added six and sophomore Ke’Mya Rux scored four.
“We’re a team that shares the ball pretty well, and I think our assists are up a lot more than they were last year because they play so well together,” Redd said.
In addition to Amelia, Prince Edward’s win streak includes victories over Nottoway, Altavista, Bluestone, Goochland and Cumberland County high schools.
The Lady Eagles visited Central Lunenburg High School on Tuesday, and they host Nottoway on Friday at 7 p.m.
