Racing in a winter wonderland

The 2017 Jingle Bell Run 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk featured an impressive number of participants who were undeterred by the cold and snowy conditions of Farmville on Saturday morning. Through the Avenues, 49 runners raced in the 5K, and 13 people took part in the 1-Mile Fun Run/ Walk.

Farmville Recreation Department (FRD) organized the event for the seventh year.

“The race was a success despite the weather not cooperating,” FRD Director of Recreation Chris Bolt said. “Everyone who participated seemed to have a great time and were full of holiday cheer.”

Organizers adjusted the start time of the event from 9 to 10 a.m. given the inclement weather.

“I was surprised with how many still came out despite the unfavorable conditions,” Bolt said. “We had over 50 percent participation, which we thought was excellent.”

He confirmed that in the six previous editions of the race, the weather had never been as snowy as it was Saturday morning, by which time a few inches had accumulated on the ground.

“Last year it was colder, though,” he said, noting that in 2016, the temperature at the start of the race was 18 degrees. This year, it was 30 degrees.

The past two years have both been a relatively frigid departure from 2015 when it was 60 degrees at race time.

The overall winner of the 5K this year was 31-year-old Edward Lane, who crossed the finish line with a time of 18 minutes, nine seconds. The overall female winner in the 5K was 38-year-old Jennifer Fraley, who finished with a time of 23:02, good for eighth out of all 49 runners.

Twelve-year-old Caleb Kline placed first in the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk with a 9:07 time.
