Current and retired members of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) throughout the Heart of Virginia celebrated the anniversary of the USMC’s founding — its birthday — during an annual event Friday evening.

The celebration took place at Charley’s Waterfront Cafe. During the event, Kerby Moore, master of ceremonies, led activities throughout, which included presenting outgoing leader of the local “Farmville Jarheads,” Jim Charleston, with a certificate of appreciation and helping cut a specialty cake with the USMC symbol.

Marine John Arsenault spoke during the event.

“(He) gave a stirring talk about what makes the Marine Corps so special,” Moore said.

Moore said Marines also honored Charley’s Co-Owner John Magin, who also serves as a Marine.

Following the tradition of past events, Moore said the eldest attending member during the evening, Reese Tucker, 92, cut a slice of cake for the youngest attending Marine, Samuel Crafton, 20, who serves as a Lance Corporal (LCPL).

The USMC was founded on Nov. 10, 1775.
