AMELIA — Three men died in a single vehicle crash that occurred in the 1700 block of Sweathouse Creek Road/Route 682 on Sept. 19.
According to Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne Geller, police responded to the Amelia County crash at 9:23 p.m.
“The driver, Reginald J. Hawkes, 20, of Crewe, died at the scene,” Geller said. “Both of the vehicle’s male passengers, Larry L. Jones, 19, of Amelia, and Kiam R. White, 18, of Dinwiddie, died at the scene, too.”
She said the vehicle traveling west on Route 682 came through a curve and, initially, ran off the left side of the road.
“The vehicle then crossed back over Route 682 and ran off the right side where it struck an embankment and then a tree,” Geller said.
She said the impact with the tree caused the vehicle to catch fire. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
