The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Majors All-Star team played only three games this year, but it left an impression with its home run-hitting offense.
Going 1-2 in the District 5 Dixie Youth Baseball Major League All-Star Tournament in Farmville, the PEFYA Majors opened with a tough 11-1 loss to the Dinwiddie Nationals All-Star team June 30.
PEFYA Majors Manager Bob Jenkins noted his team struggled offensively in that game.
“We took it with our heads up high,” he said. “The kids fought hard,” but the Nationals had a great team, that ultimately won the tourney.
After a July 1 bye, PEFYA defeated the Blackstone All-Star team 9-8 in seven innings in a July 2 game that featured 11 home runs — six coming from Prince Edward-Farmville.
Keying the comeback win, Caleb Camp tied the game up, 8-8, with a home run, and Brent Price hit a walk-off homer.
“Caleb actually had two home runs that game, and Brent had two,” Jenkins said.
Walker Jenkins and Parker Furlong rounded out PEFYA’s home run hitters on the day.
Manager Jenkins said pitcher Tanner Morris did an excellent job and was a big factor in the victory.
The PEFYA Majors were eliminated from the tourney by the Charlotte County All-Stars on July 3 via a 16-6 loss in four innings.
Jenkins said his pitchers threw well, “they just threw it right down the middle, and Charlotte had pretty good bats on them.”
Continuing PEFYA’s own hard-hitting ways, Furlong and C.J. Branch each hit home runs.
