According to a press release from Fuqua School, American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and American Legion Boys State are premier programs for teaching how government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation for the rights of a citizen.
Fuqua School rising seniors Hannah Smith, Ellie Vick — with alternates Madeline Hite, Morgan Lindsay and Claire Watson — represented the school at the 70th Virginia Girls State session, which was held recently at Longwood University.
The release cited Fuqua School’s representatives at Virginia Boys State were Paavan Bonagiri and Max Gebauer, as well as Michael Davis, Cody Howard, Brandon Trombley and Peyton Wiecking. The 75th session of Virginia Boys State was held at Radford University.
“The Fuqua faculty first nominated the students … chosen through an interview process conducted by the local American Legion and evaluated based on their leadership abilities, interest in government, service to their school and community and academics,” officials said. “During the week-long program, the students were informed of the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.”
