Reservoir could prove to be a benefit

We believe Cumberland County is taking the most appropriate measures to control potential growth and development around the Cobbs Creek Reservoir Project — one which could prove to be a boon to the county.
There’s no doubt Cumberland possesses a great need for jobs, businesses and an increased tax base. By county leaders working with residents and landowners surrounding the reservoir and those who live in the community in planning and controlling the growth, this project could do just that.
It’s understandable that those who live in the area are concerned about the potential for new homes and businesses occupying now-vacant parcels in their community, which would result in a change of scenery and lifestyles for those in the community.
We think those concerned should continue to work with their respective representatives on the county’s planning commission and board of supervisors, along with other county leaders, regarding how the county can best harness the potential for growth around the project, which, again, could prove to be very positive for the county and its residents.
Again, some level of concern and angst is appropriate; that comes with any change, especially in a place that hasn’t seen much variation in the last 50 years or so. That being said, the more neighbors and landowners work with county officials in preparing for this change, i.e. growth and development around the reservoir, the more advantageous Cumberland will be in controlling the growth and development, which could bring more businesses and jobs to the county.
