Memorial Day Ceremony is Monday

Attend the 27th Memorial Day Program at the VFW Hall on Route 60 on Monday at 10 a.m. The Buckingham County Ruritan Club, American Legion Post 134 and VFW Post 8446 sponsor this event. Everyone is invited to an open house at the VFW hall for refreshments.

The Buckingham County Middle School recently presented year-end awards to the students. A special award was given to eighth graders who maintained an honor roll status throughout all three years of middle school, including sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Each grade level also held award ceremonies to recognize students’ achievements.

Buckingham Extension is offering a Cloverbud weekend camping experience for ages 5-8. This fun weekend is held at Holiday Lake 4-H center on June 16-18, with drop off at 4-H center at Buckingham Court House area that Friday at 4:30 p.m. and pick up at 10:30 a.m. that Sunday. The cost is $87 prior to May 26 and $97 after May 26. Cloverbud youth are grouped for lodging and classes by county. Trained teen and adult leaders supervise them at a ratio of one leader to five youth. Camp staff members teach classes and lead programs. This is a districtwide camp and is limited to 60 girls and 60 boys.

Bathing suit weather is here. Come out to the Central Virginia Community Health Center and keep in shape. Next week’s activities include Tai Chi on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. for CIZE class; Wednesday is Yoga at 5 p.m.; Thursday is Body Attack at 6 p.m.; and Friday is Toddlers on the Move at 11 a.m.

Spring planting season is underway. Everyone is starting to gear up for the spring planting season for both crops and gardens. As you are making those final planting decisions and begin to plant this year’s crops, please remember to make good notes about your acreages and how each field is planted.

Good records are a great asset when you visit your county farm service agency office for crop acreage reporting. Also remember to spend some time ensuring your farm equipment is in top running condition before planting season gets underway and have a safe planting season.

Want to learn tennis? Sign up for the co-ed tennis clinic for ages 8-18 will be held at Buckingham County High School. The cost is $20 with instructor Erin Lake. Deadline to register is June 8. The clinic will run from June 12-16 from 9-10:30 a.m. Contact the Buckingham County Department of Parks and Recreation at (434) 969-4242 for more information.

Buckingham Active Seniors is a fun group of individuals, ages 50 and above, from all backgrounds who come together to share common interests and explore new ones. They do much more than hold meetings. They enjoy going on trips and tours, fundraising events, community service projects, celebrations and more. Membership is free.

The group has grown tremendously since the start in late 2010 and they hope to continue to grow. Meeting dates are the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the old Dillwyn Primary School.
