The Longwood Wind Symphony and the Longwood Jazz Ensemble will combine for a free concert Tuesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s Jarman Auditorium.

“With the Wind Symphony, saxophone soloist Cody Leonard, a senior music performance major from Crewe, will play Frank Bencriscutto’s ‘Serenade for Solo Alto Saxophone and Band,’ and Michael Velez, also a senior music major, will conduct ‘Hymn for the Innocent’ by Julie Giroux,” officials said in a press release. “Leonard, a graduate of Nottoway County High School, and Velez won the student soloist and conductor competitions last fall.”

“Selections by the 45-member Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Gordon Ring, also will include Mendelssohn’s ‘Overture for Band’ and ‘Iglesina (The Little English Girl)’ by Davide Delle Cese.”

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Charles Kinzer, will perform well-known jazz works by Louis Prima, Jeff Jarvis and Kris Berg. “Several soloists will be featured with the Jazz Ensemble.

Prior to the concert, the Longwood Flute Ensemble will play prelude music in the Jarman lobby beginning at 7:05 p.m. For more information, contact the music department at (434) 395-2504 or ringgl@longwood.edu.”
