House struck by lightning

PRINCE EDWARD — A house was struck by lightning on Thursday at 7844 Abilene Road during a fierce morning thunderstorm.

According to the Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department Chief L.W. Gilliam, there were no injuries and the damage sustained to the home was mainly electrical.

“(There was) very minimal damage to the house. Everybody is back in the house,” Gilliam said.

Gilliam said the family won’t need to leave the home.

According to the National Lightning Safety Institute, 1 out of 200 houses are struck by lightning annually.

The institute’s data also indicates that 1 in 280,000 people will be struck by lightning in a year.
