I’m glad District Four Supervisor Morgan Dunnavant raised the issue of the construction roll-off containers being abused discussed last Monday during a Buckingham County board of Supervisors’ meeting.

I wholeheartedly agree that the Route 56 solid waste site should be closed at night, just as the county’s recycling centers are, to prevent abuse.

Dunnavant’s prompt led to supervisors’ voting to close some of the sites during the day when the attendants aren’t there.

“Pretty much they leave the gate open, and they leave the station open,” Dunnavant said of the manned sites when attendants are off between certain times of the late morning and early afternoon, “and when they get back, they’ve found refrigerators, just bumpers, just all kinds of stuff that just, you know, the attendants probably would have turned away because they probably came from somewhere else.”

“The attendant leaves,” District Two Supervisor Donnie Bryan said. “And that’s when the roll-offs mysteriously (fill up).”

Abuse of the sites — i.e. people, including those who don’t live in Buckingham, placing items in incorrect containers at the sites — not only costs the county in time, manpower and repairs to solid waste vehicles, but also the taxpayers.

The supervisors who voted to close the sites during specific hours when the attendants are not present are doing their due diligence in trying to find ways to prevent abuse at the manned sites when the attendants aren’t there.

Many have disagreed, saying that closing the sites when the attendants aren’t there is a bad idea.

Those who disagree should pose alternate ideas to the prevention of abuse at the sites.

Closing the manned sites when the attendants aren’t there is a step in the right direction.
