Chicken barbecue is May 7

The Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department will have barbequed chicken for sale on May 7 from noon-2 p.m. Don’t miss the meal which includes half of a delicious chicken, potato salad, baked beans, roll, beverage and your choice of homemade cake. Preorder meals from Moss Motor Co. or Foster Tire Co. for $8 each to ensure you’ve got a dinner reserved for you.

Buckingham and Cumberland Relay for Life is sponsoring Cinco De Mayo on May 5. Survivor reception will be held from 5-6 p.m. with opening ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. Event to be held at Cumberland High School.

The Buckingham County Arts Council will host their annual Juried Art Exhibit in May. The exhibit is held each year in the council building on U.S. Route 60. Awards will be selected from numerous categories including oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, jewelry, pottery and furniture. Best in show will be awarded $100 and first place will receive $50 in each category. An opening reception will be held May 7 from 2-4 p.m., and from 4-5 p.m. the annual business meeting will follow. Buckingham senior and middle school future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters participated in many events at the 2017 FFA Southside area rally held in Chesterfield Tech Center.

Members competed in the veterinary science, creed speaking, small engine troubleshooting and agriculture mechanics contests on March 29. The day started with activities with two of the Virginia FFA state officers teaching leadership and team working skills. Concluding the event, Buckingham students took home awards for placing high in the events they entered.

Trevor Agee placed third in the small engine troubleshooting contest and Dylan Price placed fourth in the creed speaking event. The agricultural mechanics Team A placed fourth with team members Anthony Banton, Daniel Wood and Agee. Wood placed fourth individually.

Agricultural mechanics’ Team B tied for sixth place. Team members included Jakob Toney, Shane Catlett and Tyler Woodson. Woodson placed seventh individually. The veterinary science team placed sixth with team members Amanda Bryan, April Sage, Brandy Snoddy and Dylan Price.

The Buckingham County Middle School chapter junior agricultural mechanics team placed second with team members Grant Martin, Francisco Palacios and Tim Smith. Martin placed second and Smith placed fourth individually. The agriculture mechanics and veterinary science teams will compete at the 91st Virginia FFA state convention held in Blacksburg on June 26-29.

Central Virginia community Health Center offers regular fitness classes. This week’s activities include Tai Chi on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and CIZE at 5:30 p.m.; Yoga on Wednesday at 5 p.m.; Body Attack on Thursday at 6 p.m.; and Toddlers on the Move on Friday at 11 a.m.
