“Fake news” is one of President Donald Trump’s favorite expressions that he uses to condemn any news report that does not flatter him. However, I contend that Trump has been the most egregious disseminator of “fake news” of any American political figure in history. Let’s take a look at just a few of the fake news stories that either were originated by or were propagated by Trump.

• Trump claimed that attendance at his presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. was the largest in history. The U.S. Park Service released aerial photographs of recent presidential inaugurations disproving this.

• A campaign promise of Trump’s was that Mexico will pay for a border wall between Mexico and the U.S. If the wall gets built, the U.S. taxpayers will foot the bill, estimated by Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell to cost between $12-$15 billion. The Mexican president has said repeatedly that Mexico will not pay for it.

• Trump tweeted that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the presidential campaign. FBI Director James Comey (a Republican) has testified before Congress that there is no information to back this claim.

We deserve a truthful president, not a self-serving demagogue.
