Cumberland County Public Schools (CUCPS) has become the latest school division to partner with CodeRVA, which is a computer science high school scheduled to open in the fall.

According to a press release, CodeRVA offers students who attend the opportunity to complete high school requirements while learning real-world job skills. “Instruction is delivered through blended learning (a combination of online and face-to-face instruction), integrated coursework and project-based learning.”

“Students who are selected to attend CodeRVA will be required to make a four-year commitment to the program. The school operates on three trimesters and begins after Labor Day; however, there is a six-week summer session as a part of the program.”

“During freshman and sophomore years, students will take core classes needed for graduation as well as courses in computer science and technology,” school officials said in the release. “CodeRVA High School students will be provided with the opportunity to graduate with a Virginia high school diploma, an associate’s degree from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, industry certifications and paid internships in computer science related fields.”

CUCPS will send two rising ninth graders (current eighth graders) to CodeRVA for the fall semester.

“Students who are interested should have a minimum 2.0 GPA and must complete and return an application no later than April 12 … Finalists will be selected from the eligible applicants by lottery and will be notified by April 15.”

An informational session will be held in the Cumberland High School/Middle School cafetorium on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The director of the program,  Michael Bolling, will be available to answer questions.

Other school divisions participating in the program include the cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights, as well as the following counties: Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George and Sussex.
