The Fuqua School spelling bee was recently held with classroom winners from grades 5-8 participating. The winning word was “Icarus,” a character from Greek mythology who dared to fly too near the sun on wings of feathers and wax. For the second year in a row, eighth-grader Marya Dunning won the bee.
Sixth-grader Holt Mason was the runner up in this year’s competition. Other participants were Marissa Dempsey, Addie Gilley, Barrett Motter, Ava Thrasher, Christian Cannady, Hannah Myers and Ryan McKay with alternates Madeline Baldwin, Katherine Sadler, George Magnotti, Erica Chapman, Kayla Knott and Brooke Coleman. Dunning advances to the Regional Private School Spelling Bee.
