BLUEBIRD HOUSE BUILDING WORKSHOP, 10 a.m. at Bear Creek Lake State Park. This is a great activity for the whole family. A parent or responsible adult should accompany children. Pre-registration is required. There will be a limited number of kits available and couples/families may reserve a maximum of two kits. The workshop is free, but a donation of $10/kit will be accepted at the workshop. Registration may be made by contacting JoAnn Jones at (434) 547-9180 or joajonz1@gmail.com.

PANCAKE SUPPER, 5 p.m. sponsored by the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary at the firehouse, 45 Campbell Hill Road. The meal will include pancakes, sausage, bacon, apples and a drink. The cost is a donation at the door. Everyone is invited to attend.

SPAGHETTI DINNER, take out from 4-5 p.m. and eat in from 5-7 p.m. at the Abilene Community Center. Proceeds will benefit the building fund. The meal will consist of spaghetti, tossed salad, homemade french bread, homemade dessert and a beverage. This event is sponsored by Beulah United Methodist Church. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from any church member. Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children 10 and under. For more information, call Betty Gryder at (434) 223-8343.

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM, 3 p.m. at New Stone Baptist Church, 9637 Francisco Road, Buckingham. Appearing will be New Stone Inspirational Choir, Buckingham Community Choir, Wesley McAfee doing a tribute the Dr. Martin Luther King, Lilly Osborne Redd and Praise Dancers. A soul food meal will be served at 2 p.m. All are welcome.

FEBRUARY 19

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM, 3 pm. at Mercy Seat Baptist Church. Dr. Obery M. Hendricks Jr. will be the guest speaker. Hendricks is a visiting scholar at Columbia University, an emeritus professor of biblical interpretation at New York Theological Seminary and is an accomplished author. Hendricks is the son of the late Obery Hendricks Sr. and Willie B. Hendricks, formerly of Prospect and Charlotte Court House. Music will be rendered by a guest choir.

BLACK HISTORY SERVICE, 1 p.m. by the Youth Ministry of the Midway Baptist Church, Cumberland. This year’s service will be a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All are welcome. The Rev. Irman Watson is the pastor.

MEETING, 2 p.m. of the Cumberland County Historical Society in the Cumberland County Museum located in the old clerk’s office at Cumberland Court House. Bob Flippen will be joining us to bring us up to date on his trip to Australia. He will continue the tale of John Stanley James, a mysterious Englishman who came to Farmville in 1875, and who is the subject of “The Vagabond Papers.” A reminder that dues are payable for the calendar year 2017 in the amount of $20.

BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM, 5 p.m. at Spirit of Life Church of God In Christ, 308 S. Virginia St., Farmville. Everyone is welcome. Elder Novey W. Wiley Sr. is pastor.

WORSHIP SERVICE, 10:30 a.m. each Sunday at Safe Haven Christian Ministries, 505 Griffin Blvd. Farmville, (the former SCOPE building). The pastor is the Rev. Gloria Eanes.

BLACK HISTORY DAY 365, 11 a.m. at  Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Dillwyn. The morning service, Pastor Michael Mosley will bring the morning message. During morning service, the church will recognize community members who have made an impact on the lives of all. Following morning service will be a soul food luncheon followed by an afternoon service beginning at 2:30 p.m. titled “Did You Know” where various people will be showcasing African Americans from various occupations, talents and historical moments. Please come out and join us for a salute to our heritage.

FARMVILLE-PE HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO MEET, 7 p.m. in the Historic Farmville Train Station, 510 W. Third St., Farmville. The speaker will be author and historian, Bob Flippen. Flippen will report on his recent trip to Australia and reveal new information  on the Vagabond, John Stanley James, who lived in Farmville in 1874 at Stanley Park.

FEBRUARY 22

COMMUNITY MOVIE NIGHT, 6 p.m. at the Farmville Prince-Edward Library sponsored by New Century Hospice to raise awareness about end-of-life healthcare conversations. The movie shown will be “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” based on the best-selling book by Atul Gawande. The event is free, and refreshments will be served. FEBRUARY 24

COMMUNITY MEETING, 6 p.m. at Prince Edward County Middle School to discuss ways to help youth resist pressures which may influence them to experiment with drugs, join a gang or conduct themselves inappropriately on social media sites. There is no cost associated with this event, and light refreshments will be served.

FEBRUARY 25

AFRICAN AMERICAN BANQUET, 3 p.m. at the Frances Redwood Education Center, 27294 N. James Madison Hwy., New Canton, sponsored by the United Baptist Women’s Missionary and Educational Convention of Central Virginia. Tickets for $10 per person may be purchased by calling (434) 983-3019, (434) 547-7728 or (434) 983-2935 by Monday, Feb. 20. FEBRUARY 27

WINTER PROGRAM, 7 p.m. sponsored by High Bridge Trail State Park and the Farmville-Prince Edward Library. Ranger Bob Flippen will present a PowerPoint entitled “The Vagabond in Farmville, Virginia.” The event will be held at the library.

FEBRUARY 28

PANCAKE SUPPER, 6 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 2887 Cartersville Rd., Cartersville. Includes pancakes, sausage and baked apples, $7 a plate.

MEETING, 4 p.m. of the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District in the conference room of the Amelia Baptist Church, 9101 Amelia St., Amelia. The public is invited to attend the meeting.
