Bessie “Elizabeth” Rush left this life for a better one on February 8, 2017. Born September 9, 1933, she was a lifelong resident of Buckingham County.  She loved her God and was happiest serving her church. At Sharon Baptist, she served in many roles including the church clerk, choir director and Sunday school teacher for many years. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crocheting, vegetable and flower gardening. But most of all, she loved helping people.

She is mourned by her devoted husband, Gordon; daughters, Hilda Knick and husband, Mark and Joann Newton and husband, Shannon; granddaughter, Holly Vais and husband, Matthew and four great grandchildren, Jacob, Abigail, Nethanel and Lydia Vais. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, John “Jay” and Annie Self and two sisters, Susie Banton and Margaret Self.

During her illness, Elizabeth’s kindness to others came back to her with all help the family received with her care.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 10 at 11 a.m. at Sharon Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will gather on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Instead of flowers, the family asks you to please do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in Elizabeth’s honor.

Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, is serving the family.
