The Hampden-Sydney College basketball team fell on the road Saturday after Emory University used a big first half to top the Tigers 87-64 at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta.

The Eagles got off to a roaring start, scoring the first five points of the game and going up nine, 13-4, six minutes into the contest. A three-point play by freshman guard Jack Costigan drew the Tigers within three on the next possession, but a 10-0 Eagle run made it a 23-7 game at the nine-minute, 41-second mark.

Hampden-Sydney was briefly able to cut the deficit to nine, 23-14, a minute-and-a-half later, but Emory doubled its lead by halftime, 40-22

The Tigers improved their scoring output by 20 points in the second half but trailed by double digits the rest of the way.

The Eagles (8-2) held advantages for the game in field goal percentage (47 percent to 33 percent), three pointers (11 to eight), rebounds (49-33) and fastbreak points (16-2). Meanwhile, the Tigers had success converting turnovers into points, as they scored 23 points off 14 Emory turnovers. Hampden-Sydney committed just 12 giveaways.

Despite the loss, Hampden-Sydney senior guard/forward Jake Duncan scored a season-high 21 points, connecting on five three-pointers, and junior center/forward Josh Katowitz contributed 12 points. Sophomore point guard Logan Samuels added six points, three assists, two boards and two steals, and junior center/forward Guilherme Guimaraes led the team with nine rebounds.

For Emory, senior forward Jim Gordon had a team-high 13 points, junior forward/center Christopher Avant poured in nine points, 10 assists and five rebounds and sophomore guard Spencer Osborne scored 12 points to go with five boards.

Hampden-Sydney (5-6) travels to Randolph College on Wednesday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
