Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) basketball team handed host Guilford College its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss of the season Saturday, leaving Greensboro, N.C. with a 64-58 victory behind career days from senior guard/forward Jake Duncan and sophomore point guard Malik Crute.

It was the first time the Tigers had defeated the Quakers since Jan. 25, 2006.

Hampden-Sydney took a 22-9 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and weathered a run by Guilford to hold a 32-23 advantage at halftime. The Quakers outscored H-SC 35-32 in the second half and even led briefly three different times, but the Tigers responded every time.

In the final five minutes, Hampden-Sydney pulled away after Crute sank back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a junior center/forward Josh Katowitz layup assisted by Crute to put H-SC up six with one minute, 30 seconds to go.

Duncan had a career-high 29 points to lead all scorers, shooting 10-for-16 overall, 6-for-8 from 3-point range, grabbing four rebounds.

Crute also produced a career-high on offense, scoring 16 points. He shot 6-for-11 overall, 4-for-6 from behind the arc, and he registered eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

Tigers senior guard JaVonte Reddick tallied six points and eight boards.

For the game, Hampden-Sydney shot 51 percent overall, 12-for-21 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe, while Guilford shot 33 percent overall, 5-for-21 from beyond the arc and 3-for-6 from the foul line.

The Tigers won despite losing the turnover battle. They committed 17 turnovers compared to only three by Guilford, and the Quakers held a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Guilford (14-3, 7-1 ODAC) also reeled in 19 offensive rebounds, allowing it to have a 16-4 advantage on points scored in the paint.

Hampden-Sydney (7-10, 3-5 ODAC) hosts Randolph College (6-11, 3-5 ODAC) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
