JANUARY 13

LEE JACKSON DAY LUNCHTIME PROGRAM, 12:15 p.m. at High Bridge Trail State Park with a lunchtime slide show on the second Battle for High Bridge. The event will be held at Virginia’s Heartland Regional Visitor Center, 121 E. Third St. Feel free to bring a lunch and enjoy as Ranger Bob Flippen presents a PowerPoint presentation entitled “High Bridge: Lee’s Lost Gamble.” The talk focuses on the events and major figures associated with the strategy resulting in the second Battle for High Bridge. JANUARY 14

POLAR PLUNGE LUNCH, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Bojangle’s of Farmville, 1501 S. Main St. hosted by Unit Director Carlos Holland to help raise money for Special Olympics Area 12, which includes Buckingham, Cumberland and Prince Edward counties. Johann Greer, of Area 12, some Special Olympics Athletes and Team Barnhill Capt. Bob “Sunshine” Barnhill will be there to meet and greet.

YOUTH BOOK SWAP, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Farmville-Prince Edward branch library. Start fresh in the new year by bringing in gently used books from home and trade them in for “new to you” books. Board books, picture books, chapter books and any other books intended for children or teens are welcome.

MEETING, 10 a.m. of The Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American at the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library. Guest speaker will be Melody Ramsey, regent, Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter NSDAR. The topic of discussion and presentation is entitled “Historical Costumes of the 18th and 19th Centuries.”

CHILDREN’S BOOK SWAP, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Central Virginia Regional Library. Participants are asked to bring gently used books to the swap. Kids can enjoy some “down under” fun while they make aboriginal clapping sticks, listen to a story while enjoying a traditional Australian snack and watch “Finding Nemo.” The event is free.

APPRECIATION QUILT WORKSHOP, 10 a.m. will hold its first meeting at the American Legion Post 8 stew shed. The post will be completing projects started in 2016 and selecting patterns and sorting fabric. If you have patterns you’d like to try, bring several copies. Since ending with 30 quilts and nine wheelchair covers in 2016, the post will vote on increasing its 2017 goal. All volunteers are welcome. For more information, call Ellie at (434) 572-1998.

COMMEMORATION OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., 3 p.m. at First Liberty Baptist Church, Dillwyn. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Donnie W. Brown, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, New Canton. Guest choir will be the Buckingham Community Choir. A fellowship meal will take place immediately following the morning worship service.

JANUARY 16

MLK DAY CELEBRATION, 1 p.m. The youth of the Jericho Baptist Church, 615 Franklin St., Farmville, (formerly Race Street Baptist Church) and the Kappa Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, urge the community to attend this inspiring program to celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Guest speaker will be Dr. Wendy Lyle-Jones, vice president of the NAACP chapter in Farmville. The community is requested to donate to the non-perishable food project. The items collected will be donated to FACES.

JANUARY 17

ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE, 4-5:30 p.m. at The Charlotte Adult Learning Center, 395 Thomas Jefferson Hwy., Suite B, Charlotte Court House.

FARMVILLE/PRINCE EDWARD HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 7 p.m. will meet at the Historic Farmville Train Station, 510 W. Third St., Farmville. The program is a show and tell. Those attending the meeting are asked to bring something old, something unusual or a conversation piece to share with the group. Guests are always welcome.

JANUARY 18

BEEKEEPING WORKSHOP, 7 p.m. at the Buckingham Extension Office, 54 Administration Lane, Buckingham Court House. Cost will be $25, which includes all instructional and take home materials. RSVP to Buckingham Extension at (434) 969-4261.

BENEFIT STEW, 11 a.m. sponsored by the board of deacons at Bethel Baptist Church, on Main Street in Phenix. All proceeds go to Central Baptist Church in Appomattox to help with the construction of their church after the damage from last year’s tornado. Stew is $6 per quart.

JANUARY 26

EVENING STORY TIME, 7 p.m. at the Farmville-Prince Edward branch library. This is for all ages. Pajamas are encouraged, but not required for this quiet story time where children can unwind before bed with books, rhymes and activities.

Praise and prayer service will begin at 2:30 p.m. and worship service will begin at 3 p.m. The guest minister will be Elder Keven Caleb, pastor of Thessalonia Baptist Church in Bremo Bluff, along with his choir and ushers. Midway is located at 837 Guinea Road in Farmville. All are welcome.
