John C. Morgan, Jr.

John C. Morgan, Jr., 91, of Buckingham, died Friday, December 16, 2016.  He was born March 1, 1925, the son of the late John C. and Connie J. Morgan of Andersonville.

He graduated from Buckingham Central High School in May of 1943 and was immediately drafted into the Army.  After serving three years, including a year in Germany, he returned home to attend VPI under the GI Bill. He graduated in 1950 with a BS degree. He was employed by the Buckingham County Public Schools for 33 years, during which time he obtained a Masters of Education from the University of Virginia.

Mr. Morgan was a community minded person, helping to start the Buckingham County Volunteer Rescue Squad and served actively for 21 years.  John also worked in development of the Buckingham County Public Library.  He was a member for 50 years of the Buckingham County Ruritan Club and a member of the Buckingham Lodge #242 for over 65 years. He was a lifetime member of Historic Buckingham, Inc. As a teenager, John joined Bethel United Methodist Church and was an active member throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 69 years, Dorothy A. Morgan. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ernestine M. Holloman.

John is survived by a niece, Connie King and her husband, Dr. Russell King, of Fleetwood, North Carolina; nephew, Marc M. Holloman of Roanoke; great-nephew, Brandon King of Wise, North Carolina; great-niece, Dr. Jennifer King Scott and her husband, Dr. Robert Scott II and their children, Robert Henry Scott and Vivian Aubrey Scott of Concord, North Carolina.  He is also survived by a beloved and faithful sister-in-law, Nancy A. Haga of Farmville; niece, Cabell Miltenberger and husband, Bryan of Richmond and their children, Bryan, Andi, and Brandon; nephews, Juan R. Anderson III and wife, Laura of Asheville, North Carolina and their children, Ada and Levi; Claude W. Anderson Jr. and wife, Dr. Kathleen Anderson of Norfolk and their children, Alissa and Trent; Raymond Anderson and his wife, Llew of Richmond and their children, Erin (Andrew) and Emery; Morgan Anderson and wife, Karen of Charlotte, North Carolina and their children, Dorothy and Johanna; and Peyton Anderson and wife, Maria of Raleigh, North Carolina and their children Carter, Cabell and Elizabeth. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 31, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Billy Swan officiating.  The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m.
