The Fuqua School varsity football team returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon when it handed host Fredericksburg Christian School a 41-21 loss, ending a three-game losing streak.
The Falcons were playing their first game without star senior quarterback Devin Allen, who is most likely out for the season after suffering an ankle injury in the Oct. 21 game against North Cross School.
“For the most part, we did well,” Fuqua Head Coach Ben Manis said. “We had a few mental mistakes, but you’ve got a new guy playing quarterback and new guys in different positions because of injuries — you’re going to have some of that.”
Junior Billy French, who played quarterback out of the Falcons’ base set, was 6-for-13 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown. He also had 13 carries for 67 yards, and he ran in a 2-point conversion.
Senior Ed Newman, who played quarterback when Fuqua was in its single-wing set, had 10 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown.
He also had two catches for 74 yards and a score.
Junior Ben Bailey had 17 carries for 87 yards and three touchdowns, and junior Nick Fariss hit field goals from 39 and 34 yards out.
Newmen led the Falcons defense with nine tackles and one assist. Sophomore Christian Adams had six tackles and six assists, senior Nicholas Davis had six tackles and five assists, senior Jeffrey Fariss had five tackles and two assists and French had four tackles and four assists.
With a playoff berth secured, Fuqua (5-3) closes its regular season Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting Broadwater Academy.
