Leaf pickup begins Nov. 7

Starting Monday, Nov. 7 and running through Dec. 21, the town of Farmville will operate its vacuum service leaf collection. Before and after these dates, leaves must be bagged and called in for regular Monday pickups, according to a press release from the town.

The first week, Nov. 7-10, the vacuum truck will do spot pickup. The whole town should be covered during the spot pickup period. Starting with the week of Nov. 14-18, Area 1 will be the focus of pickup. Area 2 will be Nov. 21-23 and Area 3 is Nov. 28-Dec. 2. Spot pickup will be done to cover the town as needed Dec. 5-21.

Leaves must be out by 7:30 a.m. on the first scheduled day of each collection week. Residents should rake leaves to the curb or to property line near the street. The town asks not to rake leaves into the street, and to keep leaf piles clear of drainage ditches, pipes and culverts.

For those who need leaves for composting to help nourish plants or gardens, the town will deliver leaves on a first-call, first-serve basis. To keep from damaging equipment, the town asks to keep all rocks, branches and twigs out of leaf piles. Hazardous debris must be removed from piles before leaves will be picked up.

“Because of hazards of public safety and to our environment, state law prohibits leaf burning,” town officials said in the release

A map of the areas can be picked up at Farmville Town Hall offices or the Public Works department on Longwood Avenue. A brief description of the Areas is as follows:

Area 1 — “The Greens,” all avenues and through streets, Lee, Jesse’s, Cabbell’s, Hill, Griffin, Race, High, Germantown and Westhill.
