Garden club salutes debate

In honor of the long-anticipated Vice Presidential Debate at Longwood University, the September Exhibit for the Nora Lancaster Garden Club was titled “Farmville’s Salute to America,” a patriotic arrangement recognizing the 2016 Vice Presidential Debate of Oct. 4.
S.J. Drummond also presented the program, “Mums the Word — Tailgating & Table Arrangements,” for the club. Drummond is the owner and designer of her business, Petals. You can explore some of her work on Facebook from arrangements to weddings. Drummond moved to the area from Mississippi in 2012 and also works at Fuqua as a librarian/Edtech resource coordinator. Drummond teaches “quick and easy” design arrangements and table presentation, and loves mums. For tailgating, take a few “Solo” cups and plant with mums, add a team blanket, football, some Coke bottles with oak leaves, sunflowers or wheat grass and some rustic items. Traditional pots and baskets can be quickly spray-painted to change color schemes for the season.
Know what’s in your yard and your neighbor’s yard and even the side of the road. “Go out with clippers and just look,” Drummond suggested. A tangle of vines can create an impromptu table arrangement. Use items such as mason jars or buy versatile vases that can be used for many occasion “tablescapes.”
Her next presentation will be Dec. 1 with the Lunch & Learn programs held the first Thursdays of each month from noon-1 p.m. at the Prince Edward Extension Conference Room.
The club to acknowledged Rebecca Kelly, who won the Nora Lancaster Club Award, which goes to the member who earned the most points during the previous year; and Helen Smith, who was awarded the Frances Paulette Community Service Award, giving her time to club and community.
