The Cumberland High School varsity football team played host Friday to the Atlantic Shores Christian School Seahawks, a standout private school team, and fell 35-7.

“We played about as well as we could play based on the personnel that we had available,” Dukes Head Coach Edgar Knapp said.

Cumberland continues to be ravaged by injuries and lost senior defensive standout Jaylen Gilliam for most of Friday due to a hand injury.

The Dukes struggled with consistency on offense against the Seahawks, who built a 21-0 lead by halftime.

“We moved the ball well between the 20s, but again, we just couldn’t seem to get across the goal line,” Knapp said.

A 1-yard run by junior Darron Ridley put Cumberland on the scoreboard early in the third quarter, but Atlantic Shores added on two more touchdowns after that.

Senior De’Suan Jennings led the Dukes on offense, gaining 162 yards on 26 carries. Senior Brandon Leabough had 13 carries for 70 yards and went 2-for-8 passing for 45 yards.

On defense, Leabough had seven total tackles and an interception. Ridley led the team with 12 total tackles.
